The Honywood Oak

41cmx75cm
Please scroll down to view my recent paintings and to read the concept behind each one. My passion for wildlife, and fascination with the patterns and design to be found there, are visible in each one.

The bark of the Honywood Oak tells a story of survival. Weathering eight centuries, it has been home to much wildlife, outliving it all. It has stood firm as a witness to history. Humankind has played its part and we leave impressions on our surroundings for both good and bad.

The storm-weathered tree on the beach at Walton-on-the-Naze tells a different story, one of erosion, decay and death.
The cliffs, home to a peregrine falcon amongst other birds, continuously crumble, evidencing the impermanency of life.

Shingle ridges once used as part of a weapons testing site at Orford-ness now provide a habitat for breeding Ringed Plovers.
In a landscape that spoke the threat of Mutually Assured Destruction, endangered birds are now protected. Pebbles show evidence of attrition under large, uncertain skies.

The marshes of Essex are my home territory for drawing plein-air. I find beauty and quietness in their vast expanse. Migrating birds, like Lapwings provide a Winter spectacle. The Essex Wildlife Trust works hard, expanding this threatened habitat to increase the number of wading birds making it their home.
